Florence on Foot

Florence is a compact city bisected by the River Arno and surrounded by hills. The terrain in the historic center is flat for the most part and these two factors—compactness and level terrain—plus an abundance of architectural gems, narrow picturesque streets, art-filled churches, and restrictions on motorized vehicles, make Florence an ideal destination for pedestrians.

Beginning in the 19th century, legions of scribes have written walking itineraries that combine observations on art and history in order to enhance the visitors’ experience. This site focuses on Florence by Augustus J.C. Hare and, beginning with the 6th edition in 1904, revised by Welbore St. Clair Baddeley. Those who are familiar with prior editions will note that the contents have been re-arranged. After much deliberation, I decided that the current sequence which prioritizes the Piazza del Duomo followed by the Piazza Signoria and Uffizi best suits the needs of contemporary visitors.

It is hoped that this updated and expanded edition will enhance the experience of all who explore Florence on Foot.
